PHILOSOPHY

We believe the teacher is the central figure in the education of our children. We believe that all children have differences in capacity and growth, but that each child in our school should experience all the learning activities of the school. Each child is accepted and taught at the level where she/he can work comfortably and experience success in a sequentially developed framework of skills. In the developmental subjects, grouping is homogeneous to allow individualized instruction. In the content areas, grouping is heterogeneous to facilitate interaction with others of varying physical, mental, social, and emotional maturity. Evaluation is continuous so that each child’s needs may be analyzed and learning activities prescribed. Success is an intrinsic factor in intellectual and emotional growth and each child is encouraged to succeed and to recognize his/her own success.

SCHOOLWIDE  GOALS

*Use instructional methods designed to prepare all students to achieve higher standards and

become lifelong learners.

*Create professional learning communities for learning.

*Provide age appropriate activities that build a healthy self-esteem and sense of responsibility.

*Involve parents and communities in supporting students.

OUR HISTORY

HISTORY

University Elementary, which was built in 1967, is a school of 1,000+ students from PreK through fifth grade located in the southeastern section of Shreveport, Caddo Parish, Louisiana, one block east of Hwy. 1. A major addition to our school was completed during the 2000-2001 school year.

Our  School

Classes are available for students whose special needs are identified through teacher recommendation and testing. Talented and gifted students who qualify for the parish’s Gateway program have some of their content classes with a Gateway teacher. Students with disabilities follow individually designed programs utilizing a combination of regular and special teachers based on the child’s needs.

Six principals have served the school since it opened in 1967. They were Frank Tyler, Lillian Mothershed, James Sanders, Charlotte Watson, Paula Nelson and the current principal Kasie Mainiero. University has a large geographical attendance zone that is served by School Board member Barry Rachel.

University’s mascot is the wildcat. The school colors are red and white.

Each student at University has a red Wildcat folder that is sent home to the parents on Tuesdays with the child’s conduct grade for the prior week and various important papers.
